Safeguarding for Intangiable Cultural Heritage of Bangladesh

Introduction

Bhabanagara Foundation dreams of establishing a cultural force through its vision and mission to highlight the national image in the eyes of the international audience. It is committed to reviving the cultural origin and spreading the essence of its beauty in order draw back attention to the roots.

Bhabanagara Foundation aims at articulating age old multidimensional language, literature, education procedure and cultural performances among people in-country and abroad.
Bhabanagara Foundation intends to coordinate relevant research works done and going all over Bangladesh and West Bengal of India as well as overseas on Bangla language, literature and culture.
Ancient and medieval Bangla was really rich in education for spreading knowledge, cultural performances, productions, economics and development of civilization. Bhabanagara Foundation will work to revive the historical glory of Bangla through field based research and indicating their significance through the motivation of all level stakeholders.

Saymon Zakaria

Saymon Zakaria is internationally recognized for his ethnographic field-surveys that relate to Intangible Cultural Heritage. A scholar of Bangladeshi folklore, he wrote a doctoral dissertation titled “The Traditional Theater in Bangladesh: Content and Mode of Language”. Besides writing plays, he has conducted ethnographic field surveys related to Intangible Cultural Heritage.

He has delivered academic lectures on language, literature, and culture to the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California (Santa Barbara), the University of Washington, the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and the Sapientia-Hungarian University of Transylvania. Additionally, he has attended and conducted various workshops in France, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Philippines and different regions of India. He is currently Assistant Director of the Bangla Academy.

His books include Pronomohi Bongomata: Indigenous Cultural Forms of Bangladesh; Prachin Banglar Buddho Natok [The Buddhist Theatre in Ancient Bengal]; Bangladesher Lokonatok: Bisoy o Angik-Boychittra [Folk-Theatre in Bangladesh: Variation of Content and Phenomenon]. He has co-edited, with Keith Cantu, Carol Salomon’s City of Mirrors: Songs of Lālan Sāi (Oxford University Press, 2017). He received Bangla Academy Literary Award 2019.

He is Deputy Director in the Department of Culture of the Bangla Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Saymon Zakaria was born on 3rd December 1972 in Kushtia, Bangladesh.

Bhābanagara, the International Journal of Bengal Studies, is a peer-reviewed journal published two times a year by the Bhābanagara Foundation. The journal publishes original articles in the field of Bengal or Bangla Studies, as broadly defined. The views expressed are the authors, not necessarily those of the Foundation or its officials.
