Health & Justice - Funding, Fees and Finding Support

Health & Justice publishes all manuscripts Open Access (OA) and an article processing charge (APC) applies for each article accepted for publication. It is the authors' responsibility to confirm a payment method for the APC of their article. There are many routes to cover this payment, but we strongly suggest organising this before submission.

Default option

You will be asked to provide payment by Springer Nature via invoice following acceptance of your article. This must be paid promptly or production and publication of your article may be delayed.

Institutional agreements (5-minute check)

Many universities and institutions have OA funding agreements with Springer Nature. If not covered internally by your library or research funding, check if your institution has an agreement that can cover the APC for Health & Justice. Pay close attention to the conditions.

OA funders (15-minute check)

For certain authors, funding to cover the costs of OA may be included in the initial research grant application budget; remaining funds from a research grant; a dedicated open access fund; or in a block grant distributed via your institution (e.g. UKRI or DFG). The list below includes national and international funders and their policies.

Waivers and Discounts (20-30 minute process)

Springer Nature offers various routes to discounts or full waivers on APCs for publishing in Health & Justice if the above options are unavailable. All requests for discounts must be made at the point of submission; requests made during the review process or after acceptance are unable to be considered.

Location-based discount

APC waivers and discounts are available for corresponding authors based in locations classified as 'low-income' by the World Bank. We are not covered by the Springer Nature country-tiered APC pricing pilot.

  1. Check your location.
  2. Request your discount at the point of submission (see below).

Financial-need discount

Springer Nature will offer a discount/waiver for authors who lack funding or financial support. These are considered on a case-by-case basis and require evidence to be submitted and reviewed by our team. Please be advised that there can be significant delay in reviewing your request.

  • When to apply

Discounts must be requested during manuscript submission. Discount requests made after the point of submission will only be considered if there has been a change of circumstances since the manuscript was submitted.

  • How to apply
Please take care to follow the steps below to ensure your request is submitted. If in doubt, contact the SN Discounts team, quote your submission number and expect delay in their reply. For urgent queries, contact the general helpdesk and request support from the Publisher.
  1. In the Declarations/Additional Information section of your submission, click 'Discounts or waivers in cases of financial hardship' to open a dropdown section.
  2. Select the checkbox next to 'I want to apply for an APC discount or waiver' that will direct you to the discount request screen.
  3. Ticking this checkbox does not in-and-of-itself enter the request. You will need to follow the link provided at the end of the submission process on the discount request screen (and separately via email) to submit the request.
  4. Upload any documentation of your funding (or lack thereof) to support your request. Examples of this include the primary documentation of the grants used to support the research; or a letter from your head of department or head of finance confirming that you are not in receipt of any research funding (this should be signed and printed on headed paper).
This documentation is not required if you are requesting a low-income country discount.
