A Liverpool street has been evacuated for the second time in two days after a "suspicious substance" was found in a house linked to an investigation into the discovery of human remains.

Houses in Douglas Road in Anfield were first evacuated and the bomb squad called at 14:30 GMT on Sunday.

A "controlled explosion" was carried out on open land and residents were able to return, but Merseyside Police confirmed more "bags of white powder" had been found at about 13:45 on Monday.

The house search is connected to an investigation into the discovery of human remains - which have not yet been identified - at a flat in Gerards Court, St Helens, on 8 January.

'Man, 65 charged'

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "The road is temporarily closed and a number of houses surrounding the property are being evacuated as a precaution.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team have been contacted to remove the powder for further examination."

After the remains were discovered, 65-year-old George Gordon, from Gerards Court in St Helens, was charged with preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body and obstructing a coroner.

He is next due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 9 February.

Merseyside Police said the remains had not yet been identified.
