Alex Grimaldo nets late equaliser from close range
Newcastle United conceded another painful late goal as Alex Grimaldo rescued a dramatic Champions League point for Bayer Leverkusen.
The visitors showed superb powers of recovery to come from behind in the second half after Bruno Guimaraes' 13th-minute own goal at the BayArena.
Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot in the 51st minute, before setting up 19-year-old substitute Lewis Miley, who headed home his first goal in the competition.
But there was a late twist in the tale when Grimaldo slotted home from inside the box in the 88th minute following a lovely move from Leverkusen.
It was the second week in a row Newcastle missed out on three points late on after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe's side had been a little relieved to go into the break just 1-0 down, but they rallied after the break.
And they took full advantage after Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken presented the visitors with an early Christmas gift.
He was far too casual as he attempted to play the ball out from the back as Nick Woltemade closed him down and the former Brentford number one ended up giving away a penalty with a panicked sliding tackle on the German inside the box.
Up stepped the influential Gordon, who coolly sent Flekken the wrong way to level with his third penalty in three games.
The in-form forward very nearly put Newcastle in front when he struck the base of the post with a left-footed effort midway through the second half, before setting up Miley's 74th-minute effort.
That made the teenager the club's youngest ever scorer in the competition, surpassing Hugo Viana's record set in 2002 against Feyenoord.
But they could not hold on as Grimaldo linked up well with Ibrahim Maza to finish confidently and leave Newcastle 12th in the standings - two points shy of the top eight - while Leverkusen are 20th.
Newcastle analysis: Familiar issues provide frustration
This could have been a night where Newcastle took a huge step towards qualifying for the last 16.
Indeed, at one point, Newcastle had moved above Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid into sixth place in the live standings after coming from behind to lead in Germany.
But this was an occasion where some familiar issues reared their head.
Firstly, Newcastle were easily undone from another corner kick for Leverkusen's opener.
Andrich easily wriggled away from Sandro Tonali to get his head on Aleix Garcia's delivery and the ball hit the back of Guimaraes and bounced into the net.
It came just a week after Spurs captain Cristian Romero had all the time he needed to score an overhead kick from a similar situation and four days after Newcastle conceded a penalty against Burnley after midfielder Jacob Ramsey handled the ball from a corner.
But Newcastle showed immense spirit to recover in the second half, typified by the livewire Gordon, who looks back to his best.
In fact, the England forward has already matched the legendary Alan Shearer's club record for the most goals and assists (seven) in a single Champions League campaign after also setting up Miley's second.
But, once again, a late concession proved costly - just as it did against Spurs and, nearly did, following a nervy finish against 10-man Burnley.
If Newcastle are to emerge from Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland unscathed, they not only have to swiftly lift themselves following this latest sucker punch.
They have to quickly eradicate these troublesome trends from their game.
What's next for these teams?
Newcastle face bitter rivals Sunderland in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, 14 December (14:00 GMT), with their next Champions League tie at home to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, 21 January (20:00).
Leverkusen host Cologne in the Bundesliga at the BayArena on Saturday, 13 December (17:30) and visit Olympiacos in their next Champions League tie on Tuesday, 20 January (20:00).
