Leicester City are working on a deal to sign Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Caretaker Foxes manager Andy King is looking for reinforcements to help fix their ailing Championship season.

Lascelles is out of contract at the end of the season and had been expected to leave St James' Park.

The 32-year-old has made 253 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014.

We asked you what still needs to happen before the transfer window closes at 19:00 GMT on Monday.

Here are some of your comments:

Steve: I really don't understand Newcastle's recruitment strategy, if they even have one. After some shoddy acquisitions in the summer, the club is going backwards. We need constant reinforcements to push standards up and boost competition. It's not about particular positions, we need better players everywhere.

Brian: Not possible to bring in any useful players now as we have not been active or good enough in this transfer window. But there are players that should go - accept the £20m for Joe Willock and release Jacob Murphy, Nick Pope, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga, Kieran Trippier, Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade - as a minimum - in this window or the summer and replace with better quality players.

Alex: We could say we need to recruit in most positions. I'd say the priority is better wingers. I was so disappointed with the summer transfer window - we recruited awfully and wasted so much money. We need to upgrade on both wings, and possibly up front as Woltemade and Wissa don't look a good fit for our style so far. However, I'm not expecting us to do any business at all, despite the injury list, hectic fixture schedule and poor league position.

Susan: Need a new goalkeeper first of all. Also another right-back and a decent striker. It is ridiculous the way we have failed to close out games after starting so well.

Steve: I'm pretty sure Allan Saint-Maximin would love to come back - he loved us and we did in return. He's available as a free agent so we have time. He's fit and ready to go too. This would appeal to thousands of the fans - so do it, Eddie!

Eric: We need a midfield enforcer to break up opposition dominance. What about Andre Gomes at Marseille? I'd take the money for Willock, who has rarely lived up to expectations.

  4. 'Lascelles could leave but no plans for late dash for incomings'published at 07:21 GMT 2 February

Deadline day is rarely dull at Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe side's even had to race against time to finally complete a protracted move for Yoane Wissa after requesting an extension to do so back in September.

However, it is hard to imagine such scenes on Monday.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles could leave but, as far as incomings are concerned, Newcastle have no plans to make a late dash.

Though Newcastle have had money to spend, if needed, the early noises were that any mid-season moves would have an impact on what the club could do in the summer when there will be more options available and better value in the market.

Therefore, if the right player was not necessarily available at the right price, Newcastle were prepared to wait rather than sign someone just for the sake of it - even after a series of injuries at the back.

Newcastle looked especially light at one point earlier this month when defenders Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento were all sidelined.

However, young midfielder Lewis Miley has filled in impressively at right-back and Burn put in a man-of-the-match display in Paris last week after recovering from a broken rib and punctured lung.

Burn is at his best in the heart of defence, but the England international can also provide cover at left-back and such versatility will be vital to help ease the burden on Lewis Hall.

Newcastle clearly need further depth at full-back moving forward, though, not to mention two or three strong additions in other key areas.

Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Liverpool was a reminder of that as this stretched side attempt to fight on multiple fronts.

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Liverpool and Newcastle.

Here are some of your comments:

    Liverpool fans

Roger: That was a Liverpool team that had a kick to to it. The players all worked for each other. When we play like this we are unbeatable because we have that belief and the supporters know this.

Stuart: A lively, end-to-end game. Liverpool immediately responded to going a goal down. There was a great tempo to the match, accompanied by the raucous supporters. The script was written for an Ibrahima Konate goal after a strong performance from the defender. Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz continue to improve too. Ten goals from the Reds in four days can't be bad!

Tony: Signs of the old swagger there and, as a bonus, Konate played the best game of his season.

Dax: It was definitely the Liverpool we needed. Our signings were on top form. Milos Kerkez clearing his lines or scrapping for every ball. And the deadly duo of Wirtz and Ekitike could see the start of another famous Liverpool partnership. However, all the praise should go to Konate. Absolutely solid in defence, a towering performance all over the pitch and a goal at the Kop end. His dad would've been proud.

Jim: Best performance in the Premier League this year despite pressure from Newcastle. Another disappointing performance by Mohamed Salah. A very emotional goal from Konate - you can't write that sort of thing.

    Newcastle fans

Dabe: We look very good when attacking but have a tendency to over-commit, leaving gaping holes at the back. First half was great and we should have been two up, but when we give the ball away as much as we did, we got punished. More work to do and we need a genuine centre-forward.

Sam: Embarrassing is being generous. The fact we went 1-0 up and then gifted them four easy goals angers me. What angers me even more is that we gave up in the second half and pretty much let them win the game. Don't get me started on Nick Pope's embarrassment. I rated him throughout the season, but now I want him out.

Bryan: Getting rather tired of these excuses. Sloppy passing again giving Liverpool possession and goalscoring opportunities. Set pieces (mainly corners) a predictable shambles. Always getting caught on the break. Come on Eddie - get real.

Sean: Deja vu. Yet another game taking the lead and then throwing it away. Howe should have made changes earlier but, once again, the usual subs at 70 minutes after conceding who didn't impact the game. Mid-table mediocrity for this season.

Howard: Started really well but could not keep our defence tight. We miss Bruno Guimaraes and big Joelinton. I trust Eddie and his team as they are superb tactically, but the players cannot afford to ignore the plan. Three wingers up front made Liverpool struggle but we lost the shape and the pressure. I have no doubt we will bounce back but we may have to put up with a mid-table position this season - then strengthen the squad and go again.

  8. Liverpool 4-1 Newcastle: What Howe and Trippier saidpublished at 22:51 GMT 31 January

    Media caption,

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports: "We are really disappointed because I thought it was a strong performance - 4-1 is really hard on us. We scored a great goal, started really strongly and we were a strong counter-attack threat.

"It is just the manner of the goals conceded were really poor from our perspective. I would not expect us normally to concede those types of goal.

"You've got to give Hugo Ekikike a lot of credit, especially the second goal. I thought it was an unbelievable run and finish but I don't think we cover ourselves in glory on the small details.

"We switch off for a few seconds on a goal kick and you kick yourselves afterward because they are key moments in the game."

On the half-time message: "The message was that we are very much in the game and to keep passing the ball. We felt like we were giving them problems. Our athleticism was really strong today. We started the second half really strongly.

"There were a number of set-plays throughout that we probably didn't do as well as we should have done, On another day, I think that game looks very different. 4-1 looks very comfortable and I don't think it was for Liverpool."

On poor away form: "It has been a problem for us all season, there is no getting away from that fact. Ideally, today we would have played a little differently but we were really hamstrung with injuries so we went the way that we did and I was pleased with the attitude of the players. We saw some really positive signs that can help us in the future.

"We have to keep looking for solutions. We are in a tough run with a lot of away fixtures so we are going to be really finely tuned and hope we can solve our away form."

Hear more from Howe on BBC Sounds

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier, speaking to TNT Sports: "I am very frustrated, we started the game well, went man-for-man and got the first goal. We are disappointed as a group.

"When you come here you know you will have to deal with the pressure of Liverpool. You have to keep composure and your calm - then one long ball over the top and they score.

"There is no time to dwell on it, we have another massive game."

On next few games: "There are positives to take from today. We are footballers and we don't want to make any excuses for this relentless schedule."

    Ciaran Kelly
    Newcastle United reporter

The gameplan appeared to be working.

After making five changes in Paris in midweek, Eddie Howe made another bold tactical call as he started the game without a recognised striker and left £124m signings Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade on the bench.

Howe wanted his side to be fluid and difficult to mark, so he tasked Anthony Gordon with leading the line.

The forward went on to fire his side in front after drilling the ball through the legs of the sliding Milos Kerkez and past Alisson.

The former Everton man defiantly pointed to his ear in celebration at a stunned Anfield.

Newcastle had the game exactly where they wanted it.

As much as Newcastle were undone by Hugo Ekitike's brilliance, the visitors were taken apart far too easily for all of Liverpool's four goals.

Florian Wirtz should not have been able to wriggle free of so many defenders for the first.

Kieran Trippier was way out of position in the build-up to the second.

Wirtz, of all people, was unmarked for the third and Nick Pope dropped a corner for Ibrahima Konate's fourth.

Newcastle have dropped 16 points from winning positions this season. Their long wait for a landmark result at Anfield goes on.

  13. Sutton's predictions: Liverpool v Newcastlepublished at 11:10 GMT 31 January

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I was in Paris to watch Newcastle for BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday. They made loads of changes and started badly - but they could have won it in the end.

They showed a graphic on Match of the Day on Sunday which underlined how important Bruno Guimaraes is to Newcastle - because basically they don't win when he is not playing.

Eddie Howe did not risk his captain against Paris St-Germain and will be hoping he is fit enough to start on Saturday but, even if he is, I still fancy Liverpool here.

Liverpool walloped Qarabag at home on Wednesday, but one of their issues this season has been following up good wins like that in Europe with a similar result in the Premier League the following weekend.

Newcastle's poor away form should help them this time, however. The Magpies have been so flat on the road.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  14. Anything can happen on transfer deadline day... as Newcastle know wellpublished at 08:04 GMT 31 January

    Ciaran Kelly
    Newcastle United reporter

Anything can happen on transfer deadline day. There are still figures working at Newcastle United who know that better than most after what happened in the final hours of the mid-season window 15 years ago.

Andy Carroll had been so sure he was staying at his boyhood club that the towering striker even gave an interview to the club website saying as much on 31 January 2011.

It never saw the light of day after Carroll boarded a helicopter bound for Merseyside to complete a British record £35m move to Liverpool.

Yet no-one knew at the time that Carroll privately hoped he failed his medical.

"It's been a tough time for me leaving my home town," he tellingly said at his unveiling just a few days later.

Newcastle had previously insisted that Carroll was not for sale and the number nine reported to the club's training ground as normal on deadline day.

Carroll was stepping up his recovery from a thigh injury at the time, but it was soon apparent that this was not going to be a typical Monday for the then 21-year-old.

It ended up being a day that changed his life.

Liverpool had already signed Luis Suarez from Ajax, but Sir Kenny Dalglish's side were in the market for a replacement for Fernando Torres, who was moving to Chelsea.

Although Newcastle rejected a £30m offer that morning, Liverpool returned with an improved £35m bid.

What happened next has been the subject of claim and counter-claim.

Carroll, who had just bought a house in the North East, felt he had been pushed into a corner because Newcastle could not refuse such a sum.

However, former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said Carroll asked to leave after the club turned down his demands for a new deal.

The switch to Liverpool did not work out, regardless.

But Carroll always appeared destined to return to St James' Park and, following a spell at West Ham, the Geordie rejoined Newcastle in 2019.

It was rather fitting that the move went through on transfer deadline day.

"Playing for your boyhood team and going away, you realise what you had and missed," Carroll said at the time. "Coming back is something only dreams are made of."

  15. Liverpool v Newcastle: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 18:51 GMT 30 January

    Matt Jones
    BBC Sport journalist

After contrasting nights in the Champions League in midweek, it's back to the Premier League grind for Liverpool and Newcastle United when they meet at Anfield on Saturday night (20:00 GMT).

The Reds knocked off some of their domestic rust with a 6–0 win over Qarabag, booking their place in the last 16 of the competition. The freedom with which they played was in marked contrast to their sluggish recent Premier League efforts.

Newcastle performed well in their 1–1 draw away at European champions Paris St-Germain. It was not enough for them to progress directly to the last 16, though, meaning a play-off will be required.

Reds striving for Premier League antidote

When Rio Ngumoha struck deep into stoppage time to earn Liverpool a dramatic 3–2 win at Newcastle in the second week of the season, there were no real signs of the subsequent slump the Reds would endure.

Liverpool would go on to win their next three games in the top flight and establish an early lead in the process. However, since a 2–1 loss away at Crystal Palace in matchweek six, the defence of their Premier League title has unravelled.

Following that defeat, Arne Slot's side have managed only five wins from 18 games. It is the fewest number of victories recorded by a Liverpool side over the same period since Kenny Dalglish won five of his final 18 matches in charge in 2011–12.

The Reds are also on a five-game winless run in the Premier League after their 3–2 loss to Bournemouth last Saturday. It is the joint third-longest ongoing run without a victory in the division.

Nonetheless, matches against Newcastle have historically been kind to them, with the Reds currently on an 18-match unbeaten run against their opponents from the north-east.

    Gordon conundrum continues for Newcastle

A visit to Anfield may not be ideal for Newcastle at this moment in time as a result.

Not only is their away record woeful in the Premier League this season – two wins from 11 games - the players had to put in a big shift in Paris on Wednesday night. Mental and physical fatigue could be factors as a result.

There will be extra onus on Anthony Gordon going into this one, especially after he was left on the bench in midweek by manager Eddie Howe.

The former Everton player has spoken on numerous occasions about his Liverpool allegiances as a youngster. The Reds showed an interest in signing the England winger in the summer of 2024 too, but a deal didn't materialise.

Gordon finds himself in a peculiar place in terms of his form. In the Champions League he was one of the best players in the league phase, finishing with six goals and two assists. In the Premier League? It's been a different story with the forward's last goal from open play coming on 15 January 2025.

In his last outing against Liverpool, a fired-up Gordon was sent off for a late challenge on Virgil van Dijk. It was a show of frustration that has epitomised his Premier League form so far this season.

If he or Newcastle are to have any hope of ending their unwanted streaks on Saturday night, his evident passion for this fixture will need to be channelled in the right way.
