A man has been jailed for 26 years for historical sexual offences against a young girl in West Yorkshire.

Anthony Restall's offending took place in Batley over five years between 1998 and 2003, with West Yorkshire Police describing his actions as "abhorrent crimes".

Following a trial in August at Leeds Crown Court, Restall, 59, from Coventry, was convicted of two rape offences and four indecent assaults and was sentenced at the same court on Thursday.

Det Con Sally Porritt, from Kirklees' child safeguarding team, praised the "bravery and resilience" of the woman who reported Restall's offending.

"Restall has finally had to face the consequences of his abhorrent crimes he committed on a young child," she said.

"I hope today's significant sentence can bring her some comfort and closure on what has been a harrowing ordeal for all these years."

Det Con Porritt added: "If you have been a victim of a sexual offence and haven't yet reported it, we have specialist teams who will listen to you and support you throughout the process."
