Exactly one year ago, two police officers walked into a McDonald's in Pennsylvania and encountered Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing a health care executive in New York City.

On Tuesday, Manhattan prosecutors released partial footage of that encounter, as his attorneys fight to disqualify evidence gathered during that arrest in a series of hearings in state court this month.

His lawyers argue that police did not properly read Mr Mangione his constitutional rights before his arrest, and searched his belongings without a warrant.

Mr Mangione is charged with killing Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, in New York City. He pleaded not guilty to state and federal murder charges.

The video, taken with a body camera worn by a local police officer, shows a pair of officers approaching Mr Mangione as he sits at a table with a medical mask. They ask for his identification.

"Can you pull your mask down real quick for me?" an officer asks Mr Mangione. "Appreciate it."

Mr Mangione, wearing a rust-orange beanie and a black coat, obliged. When the officer asks his name, he replies, "Mark" and "Mark Rosario."

The officer informs him that a person called because she thought Mr Mangione was "suspicious", and thought he looked "like someone."

"Do you have your ID on you?" the officer asks. Mr Mangione says yes and draws an identification card from his wallet.

The latter portion of the two-minute video shows a second officer calling in the identification number on the card Mr Mangione provided.

The video represents just a small portion of the evidence and testimony heard in court. Hearings on the matter began on 1 December at the New York Supreme Criminal Court in Manhattan.

Several witness have taken the stand.

On Tuesday, Mr Mangione's lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo questioned Patrolman Stephen Fox, one of several policemen who responded to the Mangione call at the McDonald's on 9 December 2024.

Her questions were aimed at whether Mr Fox correctly read Mr Mangione his Miranda Rights – warnings US police must give suspects in custody about their right to an attorney and the right against self-incrimination.

Mr Fox also testified that he took part in searching Mr Mangione's backpack at the McDonald's, and that he was "right beside" the suspect during his arraignment, according to CBS News, the BBC's US news partner.

According to CBS, Mr Fox testified that at the arraignment, Mr Mangione looked back at the assembled reporters and stated, "All these people are here for a mass murderer, wild."

Leaving the arraignment, Mr Fox testified that Mr Mangione tripped. The officer said he told him, "I forgot you were shacked."

"It's OK, I'm going to have to get used to it," Mr Mangione said, according to Mr Fox's testimony.

The parties have played numerous videos in court and showed other physical evidence, including a notebook belonging to Mr Mangione and some of his writings.

The stakes of the hearings are significant. Should Mr Mangione's attorneys succeed in convincing Justice Gregory Carro that some of the evidence is inadmissible, it could restrict what prosecutors can show a jury during any eventual trial.
