Investigation work starting at historic breakwater

Ground investigation works are set to begin as part of plans to help preserve a historic breakwater.

The Ports of Jersey (PoJ) said the specialist work at St Catherine's would support the long-term preservation of the Grade I-listed structure as part of the "ongoing investment on the island's historic harbours".

It said the work would be focused on the northern buttress and southern slipway, but no drilling would take place directly into the historic structure itself.

Work is due to take place throughout February, PoJ added.

PoJ said the data collected would provide engineers with an insight to help shape future reinforcement and protection measures.

"As a protected and much‑loved landmark, St Catherine's Breakwater is managed in close partnership with government planning, heritage and coastal defence teams," PoJ said.

"All works have been carefully planned to respect the integrity of the structure, while."

The company said breakwater users had been informed in advance of the works, including temporary access arrangements, to "minimise any disruption".
